How to Climb out of the Pit of Despair

In the wake of the wonderful Robin Williams’ tragic passing, a spotlight of attention is being shone onto the issue of depression, and if you ask me, it’s about time.

He isn’t the first and I doubt sadly will he be the last to take his own life due to this insidious but often unrecognised, stigmatised and easily dismissed mental illness.

Speaking as someone who has a long personal history of depression and anxiety, I feel for him painfully.

Depression is a cruel and invisible torture that eats you from the inside while everybody just gets on with their life, completely oblivious.

Some people may unhelpfully tell you to “cheer up” or “snap out if it” unknowingly inflicting further pain with their thoughtless comments and lack of empathy.

Well meaning but mostly clueless doctors will usually prescribe drugs and send you home to “get over it” but what if you can’t? Straight talk counselling may not address the root cause or bring results quickly enough, if at all.

The sufferer usually finds themselves alone, increasingly isolated and sinking deeper into the myre.


Depression is also one of the reasons I was drawn to Holistic Therapies in the first place. I knew there had to be a better way to wellness. A path back to joy, back to normality and stability. And I found one.

Now that’s not to say that that black dog doesn’t come to visit once in a while, but armed with my holistic arsenal I can spot him and chase him off again very quickly, in a matter of weeks rather than months or years.

If depression is affecting your life, please don’t suffer in silence. I understand that the hopeless feelings brought on by depression may actually dishearten you from even seeking further help, but there are gentle and safe therapies that can gently but firmly get that black dog off your back.
