What a pain in the neck!

Something I’ve noticed from years of working in offices is that back and neck pain is rife.

I suffer with a lot of upper back tension myself, which causes headaches, stiffness and generally causes me a lot of discomfort. My masseuse, the amazing Darci Swift of Shamanic Bee Therapy Centre assures me that with each massage my muscles get less tense, but it still feels like an uphill struggle and back massages are painful to say in the least.

The cold damp weather we get every winter here in the UK certainly doesn’t help either.

But in case you were wondering, this post isn’t just me about moaning about back pain (LOL), I did a little research and came up with some wonderful alternative remedies to help soothe away those aches and pains to share with you…

Chili and Lavender Oil

Exactly what it says on the tin! Dee Dade teaches how to make this on her wonderful herbal courses, and I’m now the proud owner of my own homemade bottle of massage oil. Chili is warming and stimulates healing, while the lavender is anti-inflammatory and also very relaxing. As an added bonus lavender oil is reputed to cure headaches so it’s a win all round.

Regular Massages

They really make a difference. I try to go at least once a month to see Darci. My personal favourite is aromatherapy massage because I enjoy the whole holistic experience, but choose whatever type of massage feels right for you.

A word of warning – if you’re quite stiff, you may find massage rather painful, especially at first. Don’t be put off because the results are totally worth it.

 Feeling Hot Hot Hot

Warmth! Yes, heat is wonderful for muscles! Winter is not our friend, and we can end up tense and shivering, with our muscles aching just from trying to keep us warm.

Hot baths and showers are fantastic, I really love to get the shower really hot and let it pummel my back like a water massage.

Heat packs and Wheat Bags are also fantastic. I have an adorable butterfly lavender wheat bag that spends most of it’s time around my neck. It’s also great for menstrual cramps so it rarely leaves my sight!

Check Your Posture

It’s crucial to walk correctly or you could be causing yourself major problems for later in life.

Also, get your employer to check your desk or work station if you’re finding it uncomfortable. A bad chair can do untold damage!

Get Help

This might seem obvious, but you’d be surprised at the number of people who don’t go to the doctor when they should. My GP is fab and has referred me to physiotherapists and recommended chiropractic treatments in the past for various issues.

Never suffer in silence popping pain killers! Your back and neck have carried you your whole life and deserve a bit of TLC!
